Herringbone — The Pattern Detail
Herringbone is a parquet pattern in which rectangular planks are arranged at 90° angles to each other, forming a continuous zigzag visually similar to a fish skeleton (Latin: herring + bone). It originated in the Roman Empire for road paving and has been the dominant decorative wood-floor pattern in European architecture for over 350 years.
Four Constructions
- Engineered Oak Herringbone: Real-wood top layer, full warmth, sandable. AED 240–420/m².
- Laminate Herringbone: AC4/AC5 HDF core, deep V-bevel, real-wood photo decor. AED 95–140/m².
- SPC Herringbone: 100% waterproof, rigid stone-polymer core, ideal for kitchens. AED 125–160/m².
- LVT Herringbone: Flexible luxury vinyl, click or dryback. Warmer underfoot than SPC. AED 110–180/m².
Three Layout Options
The same product can be installed three different ways — each with a distinct effect:
- Parallel to Wall: Pattern runs at 45° to the room — most traditional.
- 45° Rotated: Pattern aligns with the longest wall — accentuates room direction.
- With Border: Field of herringbone framed by a straight-plank border — formal, classical.
Herringbone Installation
Herringbone installation is more skilled than straight-plank. The day breaks down as:
- Centre-line layout drawn from primary focal point.
- Pattern set out so symmetry is preserved at doors and openings.
- Pre-machined L/R packs alternately laid — click or glue-down.
- Perimeter trimmed, skirting fitted, transitions installed.
Herringbone Care
Pattern doesn’t change behaviour — care is identical to straight-plank in the same material. Engineered oak herringbone needs soft sweeping, weekly damp mop, and periodic re-oiling. Laminate and SPC herringbone tolerate slightly more aggressive cleaning.

Herringbone planks are rectangular and meet at 90° corners. Chevron planks are cut at 45° angles and meet at sharp vertices. Herringbone is the more classic, busier look; chevron is more modern and quieter.
Laminate herringbone starts from AED 95/m² installed. SPC and LVT herringbone AED 125–180/m². Engineered oak herringbone AED 240–380/m². Designer wide-plank herringbone AED 380–600/m².
We supply herringbone in four constructions: engineered hardwood, solid wood, laminate (AC4/AC5), and SPC/LVT. All pre-machined as left and right plank pairs.
Herringbone makes rooms feel more sophisticated and slightly more dynamic. A 45°-rotated pattern can visually expand a narrow corridor.
A 80–100m² Dubai apartment in click herringbone takes 2–3 days. Glue-down engineered takes 3–5 days. Site-finished oak with sanding, staining and 3-coat lacquer takes 6–10 days.
Yes — engineered, laminate and SPC herringbone are all UFH-compatible up to 27°C surface temperature.
Modern installations often run herringbone to the perimeter wall with skirting. Classical projects use a contrast-grain border framing the herringbone field.
